Padman just doesn't want to work!
« on: April 21, 2011, 06:50:16 pm »
So for a class i was required to choose a game to install on OpenSuSE 10. I choose padman because i thought it would be the easiest. But the damn thing won't load. I've been trying to solve the problem for days but i haven't been successful.

It appears i'm using some intel-xorg legacy drivers for my onboard video. I think this may be my issue but i'm not sure.
I tried some of the fixes mentioned on the worldofpadman web site and nothing seems to be working.

Open the config file wop_config.cfg and find the lines that set the screen size, something like:
seta r_customheight "768"
seta r_customwidth "1024"

Set the size to something reasonable, like 1024x768. You may also want to set it to use a window (vs fullscreen):
seta r_fullscreen "0"
Thanks, Drizz!

OpenSUSE is a POS :)

Seriously though, trying to run any game with onboard video is problematic.  If it's an Intel, make sure the latest drivers are installed, Intel actually makes pretty good Linux drivers.

Monkey where is this wop_config.cfg file? This damn thing didn't come with any usage or installation instructions...

Abz are those the Mesa drivers you are talking about? I can't seem to find anything that says anything about official intel drivers..
The ones here?

Yea, I think that is them.  I have little experience with intel drivers though, I just know they should be used for opengl apps like padman.

There should be an installer though.  I'm not sure your doing something right.

Tell you what, I'll download and install it on here real quick, I'll report back in a few minutes (ok their download speed sucks, I'll report back in 25 minutes or so).

I'm going to grab this (padman 1.5 for linux) : http://sourceforge.net/projects/wop-engine/files/v1.5/wop-1.5-unified.zip/download
and then I'll grab this (hotfix 1.5.1) for linux : http://sourceforge.net/projects/wop-engine/files/v1.5/wop-1.5.1-hotfix.zip/download

ok, the laptop I'm on has a ATI x1600 integrated video card, I'm running the open source drivers included with Ubuntu 10.10, not the ATI drivers.

I unzipped the unified 1.5 into a folder called ~/WoP  I then unzipped the 1.5.1 patch to the same location.

I then opened the cli.  Since I'm running on 32bit, I typed in ./wop.i386

It came up and ran fine, everything worked perfected, I can join internet games and sound/graphics appear to run well.

This was the output from running it, to the time it was terminated:

Thanks I went ahead and found an rpm of the latest Mesa drivers and installed them. Damn thing went apeshit when i did. Seems like it may be happier now but I can't check because the actual computer is in a lab on campus.
